Our Practices & Motto

At theBaillie Farm what really got us thinking about becoming a grower of Sustainable local food is the mantra we once heard, "Think Global, Eat Local." In the last few years it has felt like "the cat is out of the bag" when it comes to our Nation's food system.  We've found that  food is political and social.  Where you spend your food dollars makes a big difference to our environment and the local scenery. Spending your food dollars at super markets supports farms in foreign countries. Spending just a fraction of those dollars locally, you support local farms AND keep them from becoming housing developments or strip malls.

This means that at Baillie Farm we promise to share your dollars with other local farms.  The Europeans say “Eat your view” meaning if you want farms in your community, you need to buy from them.  In other words, buying locally keeps green open spaces in your town and helps to ensure that the means to produce food, will exist in your community.

So what does Sustainably Grown actually mean here at Baillie Farm? Sustainably Grown means that we use Organic practices to grow our crops AND environmentally conscious methods to get there, like our gravity fed watering system that uses no energy inputs.  Now a days "Organic” is a term for a type of regulated farming practice in which you must be certified to call your self such - but all of these practices have been employed by farmers for thousands of years before our governmental certification process came along. These practices denote methods that build the soil and enhance the environment while prohibiting the use of all chemicals that are harmful to animals and people. We do all of that.

Since this is our first year of growing crops in our particular location we are only in the beginning stages of our Certification process because  it takes three years to clear the requirements and we're just not there yet.   We are farming with responsible and sustainable methods and hope to certify in the future.  Since we are such a young farm we have a lot of start up costs so waiting on certification during our first year has allowed us to keep significantly lower costs too which has helped us keep our prices in line with other producers (a very important aspect for customers). We want our customers to feel comfortable with how we farm, what we use on our fields, what practices we use and what our philosophy is about producing crops.  Therefore at the Baillie Farm we pledge to use sustainable, responsible and earth friendly standards, to be transparent with our inputs and farm in the same manner we have been since our family began farming here three generations ago.  Please feel free to visit, and ask any questions you may have .

The Farm

The Baillie Farm is a subset of a family owned and operated Dairy Farm that has also been raising beef cattle and sheep for many years.  The Baillie Farm manifested from a portion of the Dairy farm that had been abandoned many years ago and is now being renovated and turned into a Sustainably Grown produce farm. Of the abandoned 234 acres we are using 5 acres for vegetables & fruits, 100 acres for our grass fed beef cows, 10 acres for our sheep and patches in between for our free range heritage breed chickens.
